PENANG - Pearl of the Orient
This beautiful island is without doubt a captivating fusion of the East and West located on the north west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The state embraces modernity while at the same time retaining its traditions and old world charm, which are reflected in its harmonious multiracial populace and well-preserved heritage buildings.
Penang consists of Penang Island, and a coastal strip on the mainland known as Seberang Perai. The island is separated from the mainland by a channel, but they are linked via the 13.5 km-long Penang Bridge, which has become the modern archetypal landmark of the island, and a 24-hour ferry service that plies the channel.
Long regarded as the food capital of Malaysia, the best place to hunt for food is the popular Gurney Drive. Penang is also a shopper's paradise for goods old and new at a bargain price. Batu Ferringhi is another popular destination in Penang, a resort strip stretching along the northern coast of the island with white sandy beaches, plenty of international hotels, extensive dining facilities and enjoyable nocturnal shopping!
