MELAKA - The Historic State
Melaka is certainly a sight to behold. It is home to a cornucopia of historical attractions as well as a variety of unique customs and traditions. It is a melting pot of all races, mainly Malays, Chinese, Indians, Baba Nyonya (Peranakan), Portuguese, Chitty and Orang Asli - a true reflection of tolerance, harmony and diversity of this country.
Here is where the foundation of Malaysian history began and expanded, evident from the remains of old buildings and statuettes. The A Famosa, an old Portuguese fort, the striking red Stadthuys Building and the replica of the Sultan's Palace are just some of the must-go places to visit if one would like to experience the feel of an old Melaka and understand the background of Malaysian history.
Melaka is also a home to abundance of exotic dishes that are as unique as the communities from which they are derived. Two of the most unique and distinctive cuisines that have their origins in Melaka are those of the Peranakan or Baba Nyonya. Don't forget to check out the Jonker Street where many of Melaka's best food outlets are located - the coffee shops and hawker stalls, some of which have been operating for generations.
