KEDAH - The Ricebowl of Malaysia
Kedah is an exciting destination with vast expanses of paddy fields, charming towns, imposing limestone outcrops and picturesque views. Situated in the far north of Peninsular and very much acclaimed as Malaysia's main rice producing state, its panoramic rural landscape is massively dominated by paddy fields and sprinkled with traditional Malay wooden homes.
Said to be the oldest state in the country, it lays claim to some outstanding historical attractions. The most prominent one is the Bujang Valley, the cradle of a thriving ancient civilization dating back to the 5th century AD. It is today one of the country's most treasured archeological sites.
Alor Star, the state capital, is a lively township with a combination of fine old buildings and modern facilities. However, the gem of Kedah is the Langkawi Island, an internationally renowned island resort filled with picturesque beaches and wonderful accommodation. A fascinating array of legendary tales adds colours to the island's attraction - the tales of wronged maiden, feuding giants, mystical lakes and magical wells.
